Small CNC Lathes
A small CNC lathe doesn’t necessarily mean the size of the machine, often it is referring to the diameter of material the CNC lathe is able to operate to.
For example, our CNC lathes are able to machine down to a 50mm bar, which means we are able to produce 3mm dowels on one of our lathes. It is this very small and very accurate service that sets us apart from other engineers, and this is why have built up such a great reputation as a high precision engineering company.
The lathes we use are also used on much more specialised jobs. They will utilise a single point tool, with the radius of the material sitting on the “X” and “Y” axis. This means we are able to manufacture very intricate shapes including spheres (such as bearings).
The CNC lathes are now able to work at high speeds, with the tip of the tool continuously blasted with coolant. This helps to maintain the temperature ensuring that the tool last longer and a better accuracy is achieved. The coolant not only keeps the tool “cool”, it will also keep the material cool, which will mean less “activity” from the metal. If the material isn’t kept cool, the metal may change shape if the temperature gets too high. The final benefit of the coolant is the removal of swarfe. Swarfe is the fine strips of metal that are removed from a machined piece of material. If this was to get in between the job and the tool, it can create major problems. The coolant is applied right at the point where the cutting (or machining) is taking place meaning that all the swarfe is removed instantly.
